Safer Cycling Roadshow in Ellesmere Port on August 14

4th August 2015

Due to popular demand the Council’s itravelsmart team in partnership with Cheshire Police are holding a Bike Security Chipping and Dr Bike event in Ellesmere Port on Friday August 14. It takes place at Asda, between 11am and 2pm.

Big Bills Bikes from Ellesmere Port will be on hand to give bikes a health check and Cheshire Police will be offering bike security chipping. The itravelsmart team will be providing information on local sustainable travel options.

There will also be lots of goodies to give away and a free prize draw for £50 of love to shop vouchers.

Local Councillor Jess Crook said: “Many people have said they would love to combine their commute to work and their passion for cycling and as a consequence this is growing in popularity.

“More than1000 bicycles have been chipped so far in Chester and Ellesmere Port. The retail value of these microchips is typically £14.99 but as part of the itravelsmart initiative they are being provided free of charge.”

Working with Cheshire Police, the itravelsmart team will be offering Immobitag, a simple bike security chipping solution.

The Immobitag is based on the same technology as microchipping pets. One of the team inserts an electronic microchip into the frame of the bicycle; each chip has a unique reference number that is assigned to the owner. This information is then fed into the Police’s national mobile property register.

Once the bicycle is microchipped, if it ever gets stolen the Police anywhere in the UK have the ability to track down the real owner once the bicycle is recovered.

In addition to the microchip, a sticker is also put on the bicycle alerting would-be thieves to the fact it is microchipped.

itravelsmart is funded by the Local Sustainable Transport Fund, a Department for Transport Programme, aimed at achieving economic growth, job expansion and carbon reduction through generating sustainable journeys to work.
