The 1st Battalion the Mercian Regiment (Cheshire) will parade through Ellesmere Port on a homecoming march on Wednesday 12 June.

The troops have recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan and the Homecoming March, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Phil Kimber MBE, will comprise around 200 personnel, including a number from Ellesmere Port, and the Band of The Royal Logistic Corps.

Chairman of Cheshire West and Chester Council, Councillor Jill Houlbrook, said: “Wednesday, June 12 will be a very proud day for Cheshire West and Chester and its citizens, particularly those in the Ellesmere Port area.

“We are honoured that the Mercian Regiment, which has long standing and historic links to the borough, has agreed to parade through the town of Ellesmere Port.

“The men and women of the 1st Battalion have recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan and I encourage everyone to come along and show their appreciation of the huge contribution made to our country by the Mercian Regiment.”

The timings for the parade are:

2.30pm: The parade will assemble in Ellesmere Port town centre, in the Wellington Road Car Park

3.00pm: The parade leaves the Wellington Road Car Park

Between 3pm and 3.15pm: The parade continues along Wellington Road, Cromwell Road, Whitby Rd, Civic Way, Civic Square The parade will march to the Civic Hall where it will take the salute from the Chairman of Cheshire West and Chester Council and the Mayor of Ellesmere Port.

3.20pm: The parade ends at Civic Square

3.25pm: The Chairman of Cheshire West and Chester, Councillor Jill Houlbrook will be joined by the Mayor of Ellesmere Port, Councillor Bob Crompton, in the Civic Square to present medals to soldiers from the Ellesmere Port area who have completed their first tour of duty in Afghanistan.
